Interior Design as a Complete Work of Art: Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh understood the interior as one complete work. From his early years at Honeyman & Keppie in Glasgow to the House for an Art Lover, designed in 1901 for a competition held by a German design magazine, he drew walls, light, furniture and the smallest detail as a single composition.
His high-backed chairs, still produced today in Cassina's Maestri collection, stand in a room like sculptures rather than objects placed within it. This idea of furniture shaping space, not merely filling it, runs through the interiors of DÉMARTISTUDIO, from Altbau apartments in Berlin to Mediterranean residences in Limassol.
For
DÉMARTISTUDIO, Mackintosh's conviction remains a working principle: an interior is never a collection of objects, but one composition in which plan, light, furniture and art are conceived together.
